The Federal Highway Administration maintains a list of 20 Proven Safety Countermeasures that offer significant and measurable impacts on improving safety. They fall into four areas: roadway departure, intersections, pedestrians and bicycles, and crosscutting measures. Many of them start with better signage, from curve warning signs to pedestrian crossing signs.
Countermeasures that keep vehicles in their lane and on the road, especially through sharp curves, wet conditions, polished roadway surfaces, and driving speeds in excess of the curve advisory speed.
Countermeasures that reduce conflicts and crashes where roads meet, from signalized corridors to stop-controlled crossings.
Countermeasures that protect the most vulnerable road users at crossings and along the roadway.
Planning and analysis tools that improve safety across every road type.
